Branded shirts for employee volunteer days

Apparel & Merch

A volunteer shirt helps a group look organized and makes team members easier to identify. It should also be comfortable for the work and respectful of the organization hosting the event. Start with the activity before choosing the design.

Ask the community partner first

Confirm any clothing requirements, restrictions on logos and guidance for photos. A park cleanup, food-packing shift and fundraising event may need different garments. Get permission before including a partner's name or logo, and use the approved artwork they provide.

Choose a shirt people can work in

Compare fabric weight, fit and care instructions. Offer a practical size range and collect sizes using the actual garment chart. If the activity involves heat, tools, food handling or other specific requirements, follow the host's instructions rather than assuming a standard promotional shirt is suitable.

Make the design easy to recognize

A clear team identifier can work better than a long slogan. Consider how the artwork will look from a distance and whether it needs a front, back or sleeve placement. A design without a specific date may be reusable for future volunteer days, provided the message remains appropriate.

Organize distribution before event day

Set a size-collection deadline, approve one final proof and assign someone to receive the order. Sort shirts by name or size before the event. Keep a limited extra supply for late registrations, based on actual attendance expectations rather than an arbitrary large overage.

Tell the story accurately afterward

With permission, share what the volunteers did and acknowledge the community partner. Do not turn an illustrative project idea into a claimed customer success story or invent participation totals. If the shirts will be reused, explain how to care for and store them. This planning guide replaces an unavailable historical article with general advice, not a reconstruction of that case study.
