Best Practices for Designing a Custom Mask

  • Nov 11, 2020

Face masks are part of our new normal and are an important way to keep ourselves and those around us safe. Since they are likely to be part of our look for quite some time, why not take this opportunity to show off your brand? Designing a custom mask for your business is a great way to not only show others you care but stay on brand too. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the demand for masks and sanitizer has been incredible and our team has been working hard to fill the need. As of November 2020, we at Marked Promotions have sold over 1,354,000+ masks and 24,000 bottles of custom hand sanitizer!

Customization options for your custom mask

There are a variety of ways you can customize masks so they fit your branding and needs. The first step is to choose your color and style. Next, you can decide whether to leave the mask blank or if you want to add a custom logo / design. The most popular option is to decorate with a screen print transfer. This style allows for multiple color decoration with a softer hand than a vinyl transfer. Whatever you choose, our team is here to help execute a clean, professional look.

Here are some of the print options available

  • Screen print – this option has a quick turnaround, but is typically limited to one color imprint.

  • Heat pressed vinyl – this option also has a quick turnaround time and is typically limited to one color decoration choice.

  • Screen print transfer – this option allows for multiple color imprints and uses a softer hand than pressed vinyl.

  • Digitally printed heat pressed vinyl – provides full color vinyl decal options, but typically has an outline.

  • Full color digitally printing or dye sublimation – This option has a longer production time but allows for full color, edge to edge digital printing or dye sublimation* decoration.

*Did you know: Sublimation is a method of printing that transfers your design into a material or fabric using heat and ink?

Best practices for designing a custom mask and logo placement

It’s important to remember to keep the amount of space in mind when designing your custom mask. Often, decoration space is limited due to the pleats and specific shape of the mask.  This is especially important to remember when choosing screen printing, using heat pressed vinyl, or a screen print transfer. Unless you’re creating a digitally printed or dye sublimated option, keep the imprint simple and sleek. If using text, making sure it’s large enough and legible is crucial.

Lastly, think about how the imprint or logo will look while the mask is worn. We recommend avoiding the nose or the mouth area because the logo and design can appear distorted when the mask is on. Placing imprints and logos on the cheek area are the most common placement choices. Digitally printing or sublimation masks allow for the most freedom when designing a mask.  If you have a lot of detail in your art or would like the design to fully cover the mask, this is definitely the way to go.

Fabric choices are crucial

Everyone who has worn a mask knows the way it feels is just as important as the way it looks. That’s why choosing a fabric when designing a custom mask is crucial. Many customers choose a moisture wicking, breathable material such as a polyester fabric with a little stretch. The FDA recommends selecting a mask that has at least two layers and completely covers your nose and mouth to provide the best protection and help stop the spread of COVID-19.

At Marked Promotions, custom fabric options are always available depending on your needs and budget.  We recommend that you avoid masks that are made with fabrics such as vinyl as they make it harder to breathe. Another thing to keep in mind is that you should choose masks with two layers and are made of breathable and washable fabric such as polyester.

Another popular style is the gaiter style mask. These make it easy to fold into two layers and can be worn comfortably around the neck instead of over the ears. While the masks we customize are reusable, don’t forget to wash your masks regularly as recommended by the CDC. For more guidance from the CDC on how to select masks, click here.

Custom hand sanitizer is also great

. Hand sanitizer branded with your company logo is another great way to show your employees and customers you care about their well being.  The FDA recommends using a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. We carry hand sanitizer that meets the FDA recommendations and is available in multiple shapes and sizes. We’ll customize with your logo to create an extremely useful and effective branded promotional item. Marked Promotions is here to help you create custom masks with your logo and promote your brand.
